Youth help the elderly for Mandela Day

Members of the Selcourt Methodist Church spent Mandela Day, July 18, doing repairs at the Presidentia municipal homes.

Reverend Charlie Wernich started the initiative to help the needy elderly. The church’s volunteers climbed on the roofs to clean out the gutters, sawed down low-hanging branches and assisted with other minor repairs such as fixing leaking taps and toilets, pruning bushes and garden maintenance.

Team leader, Elvine Tait, said they were happy that there were many youths involved in the project this year.

The youths braved the chilly weather and joined youth pastor Robbie Ngobeni on the roof to clean out the gutters.

The youth also went knocking on doors looking for hosepipes to clean the gutters they couldn’t reach.

Church members said they spent more than 67 minutes at Presidentia with the elderly, but that it’s not what the day was about for them and that they are proud of what they managed to accomplish.

Operation Snowdrop also donated boerewors to the church group who made boerewors rolls and handed the food out to the residents.
