New refuse removal system to be implemented

The Ekurhuleni Metro is currently rolling out new 240 litre refuse bins to residents in the Springs area.

The wheelie bin distribution process commenced at the beginning of July and is set to run until the end of the month.

The bins are free of charge and refuse removal services will be charged as per the municipal tariff schedule.

Residents will be requested to produce a copy of their ID document and latest Ekurhuleni utility account upon receipt of the wheelie bins.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the Waste Management Services (WMS) will start utilising the system in August and only refuse placed in these containers, which display the metro logo, will be collected.

This means that refuse removal officials will no longer pick up additional refuse bags, branches or any other form of refuse placed on top of or next to the refuse bins.

This changeover is to eliminate some operational and service delivery inefficiencies.

Gadebe says it is important to enhance legislative compliance with regard to service standards and cost reflectiveness of the WMS’s tariff structure.

Residents and businesses will, however, be notified when the changeover takes place.

Should anyone need more bins they can apply to the WMS depot for additional bins.

Although the bins are supplied free of charge, residents will be levied individually.

In an effort to combat theft, homeowners are advised to neatly mark the bin with their address details.

The bins should be placed outside the premises of the residence at 7am on refuse collection days to avoid missing refuse collection dates.

Residents who have missed the collections date as per the schedule can still collect their bins at the WMS depot in Stadium Road, Geduld

Extension.

The depot can be contacted at 011 999 8497 or 011 999 8526.
