Muslim community helps those less fortunate

While fasting during the month of Ramadan, Muslims show empathy towards the poor and destitute.

It is compulsory that each and every member of Muslim households across the world contribute towards a charity in their community

This is a rule within the Muslim jurisprudence (rule of the Muslim Law).

The Sadqatul-Fitr-Festival is the Bakerton Muslim community’s charity organisation.

Bakerton resident Aboo Seedat says the funds are collected from the beginning of the fasting month and then distributed to the poor for the purpose of purchasing various items, such as food and clothing.

Grocery parcels are also made up and distributed.

They include items such as mealie meal, sugar, samp and oil.

This parcel is sufficient for one month.

Aboo says the distribution is done at the end of Ramadan.
