Metro not responsible for repairs to stormwater drain

Fixing the damaged municipal kerb in Marlu Road, Selcourt Enclosure, is the responsibility of the developer of the new complex along this street.

This is according to Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, who says the kerb was removed by the developers without the metro’s permission and dumped onto the stormwater catchpit.

It was recently reported in the Advertiser (‘Stormwater drain collapses in Selcourt Enclosure’, June 24) how the stormwater drain was damaged.

Resident Bruce Gardner says this drain often overflows because it is the only one on in the vicinity.

He requested the metro repair the drain during winter to prevent a build-up of water, which he claims can cause a serious traffic hazard.

Gadebe says the developer’s action caused the stormwater drain to collapse.

He adds the matter will be taken up by the metro’s building control division.

“The rubble will be removed and the catchpit will be cleaned,” says Gadebe.
