Mandela medals awarded to soldiers

The South African Army Engineer Formation held a medal parade on Friday at the Dunnottar Military Base.

Mandela medals were handed to 150 soldiers for their assistance with Nelson Mandela’s funeral, as well as their assistance while the former state president was in hospital.

Capt Cynthia Zondo, spokesman of the military base, says the soldiers made preparations in the area for Mandela’s funeral.

The parade started at 10am with the military band playing.

Long-service medals were also handed out to members who have served 10, 20 and 30 years.

Commanding officer Brig Gen Willy Nkosi congratulated the soldiers on receiving their Mandela Medals and also thanked soldiers for their good service to the military.
