The 45-year-old father of the child was watching TV in the bedroom at 9.30pm, when he heard the dogs barking.
When he went to investigate, he saw a man wearing a long, brown coat at the front door.
Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the father ran to the dining room, where he found one man already inside the house.
When the father ran back to the bedroom, he allegedly saw another man climbing through the window.
Ramphora says this man was armed and fired two shots at the father.
One of the robbers then assaulted him, while another repeatedly hit the child.
The robber in the coat allegedly ordered the one with the gun to shoot the father, but he refused.
They took a laptop, a cellphone and wallet containing bank cards and the father’s identity document.
The three robbers are between 20 and 30 years old.
