Cause of excessive power outage explained

A cable rupture was the cause of the 28-hour blackout recently suffered by residents of Springs Extension.

This is according to Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson Themba Gaddebe.

The power outage was reported in last week’s Addie, ‘Residents without power for 28 hours.’

Broad Street resident Trudy van Zyl (70) said they were not given any explanation when they contacted the metro for information.

“They just told us, ‘we don’t know’,” she said.

Gadebe, however, says council was aware of the problem at the time.

“On the morning of June 3, at 8am to 4pm, the power was switched off as per the notification given out to the residents of the area,” he says.

“Unfortunately, at approximately 7pm, a cable ruptured and blew up at the substation that supplies the area, causing a power outage.

“The repairs were finalised at 11am the following day, and unfortunately, this kind of problem cannot be prevented.”
