Care centre needs help

The Thandabantu Community Centre in Geduld is in urgent need of help to continue their selfless service to the less fortunate residents of Springs.

Without the assistance from the centre many will be forced to endure the freezing winter months without any warmth or food.

The centre registered as a non-profit organisation two years ago, and has been helping the community ever since.

Pieter Snooke (38) who works in the telesales department at the organisation, says they feed the homeless and destitute twice a week.

“We give them food and something to drink every Wednesday and Saturday, at 1.30pm at the centre,” he says.

Pieter adds that during winter, they give the community soup and bread, but the organisation feels this is not enough.

The owner and founder of the organisation, Meriaam Ntselo (62) says they are in desperate need of blankets and clothes to distribute this winter.

“Some in the community are left in the cold with no warmth,” she says.

“I have been giving them my own blankets and almost have none left, but what am I supposed to do when a woman with a baby asks for help?”

Most of the food and clothes they distribute is purchased with Meriaam’s own money, and the organisation is struggling to get funding and donations.

“We feed about 200 people on a weekly basis, half of whom are children,” says Meriaam.

Mothers with babies are given a litre of milk, and parents must provide the child’s birth certificate when receiving milk or food.

“We truly need the community’s help to be able to provide for the underprivileged people of Springs,” adds Meriaam.

Donations of food, clothes and blankets will be gratefully received.

Contact the centre on 011 056 8954 or drop off donations at 58 Third Avenue, Geduld.
