One road with many problems

"Now that the rains have ceased it would really make a lot of sense to catch up on the pothole repairs on our roads," says Bruce Gardner.

This Selcourt resident has reported potholes at the corner of Rietfontein and Vlakfontein roads, Selcourt, at least four times on the Ekurhuleni Metro‘s website, but it just gets steadily worse.

Everyone has to drive around the holes to avoid damaging their vehicles and this causes havoc at the intersection.

He first reported the problem about four months ago and pleads for someone to do something.

No Ekurhuleni road crews have been seen in the area for a long time, and Gardner wonders if they have gone into hibernation.

Another concern in Rietfontein Road are the new concrete street light pillars that have been knocked over, allegedly by cable thieves.

Gardner claims cables have been stolen from at least eight pillars.

“These pillars are lying very close to, and protruding onto the road, which is really dangerous,” he says.

“If someone hits them they can throw away their tyres and wheels,” he says.

Residents feel the installation of the street lights has been a fruitless exercise.

Gardner says the cost must have been extremely high, and the cables were stolen within three months of the installation, and now again some eight months later.

He reckons replacing the cables and broken pillars would be a total waste of time and money.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe previously reported that plans are currently under way to involve communities in the fight against the vandalism and theft of the street lights.

He says the intersection is on the metro’s rehabilitation plan to be implemented in the first week of June.
