Young and old enjoy the Fatima Festival

The annual Fatima Festival was held at the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Springs on Sunday.

Sisters Felizidade Jardim and Hilda Pingo say the festival, which commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to three children in the village of Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, is the highlight of the year.

The Springs festival was started by the local Portuguese community 30 years ago.

After mass, a beautifully decorated statute of the Virgin Mary is carried in procession.

Maria-Goretti Helena, a member of the church, explains a family get-together follows the proceedings.

The event attracts hundreds of Springsites who come to enjoy the delicious food and traditional entertainment.

Well-known Portuguese singers Gina Martins and Roy Cellestino entertained the crowd with folk music, and the dance floor was soon filled with eager dancers.

“The funds raised on the day are always ear-marked for a specific project, and this year will be used for painting and repairing the 90-year-old church roof,” says Maria-Goretti.
