Metro tries to curb theft of manhole covers

Manhole covers are being stolen from all over Springs, especially in areas such as Geduld.

In Geduld Road and Boundary Road there are about five manhole covers missing, making the roads hazardous for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“In its continuous efforts to curb the theft of manhole covers, the Ekurhuleni Metro is currently investigating different materials for manhole covers with no money value and that will meet the necessary safety requirements,” says Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro.

The Brakpan Depot is trying its best to keep up with replacing stolen manhole covers and to promptly respond to complaints received from the call centre.

“The municipality encourages residents to report theft and vandalism of manhole covers to the municipal call centre on 0860 543 000,” says Gadebe.
