Children at Morester Primary School learn about their rights

This week is Child Protection Week.

Officials from the Department of Social Development in Springs conducted a group visit to Morester Primary School, last Thursday, in commemoration of Child Protection Week.

During the visit, grade seven learners were educated on several topics including drugs, criminal behaviour and teenage pregnancy.

Child Protection Week is observed annually between May 27 and June 2, and seeks to raise awareness about the rights of children, as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.

Guest speaker at the event, Buli Nyeke from the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) in Springs, gave a talk about drugs, whilst Ashmika Mungul, a social worker from the department, presented the remainder of the topics.

After the presentation, the learners were given an opportunity to ask questions.

Ashmika says the learners engaged well with the officials and were eager to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible.
