More to brandy than ‘Klippies and Coke’

A brandy tasting evening was held at Riverside Lodge in Springs last Thursday, where 75 guests tasted various pot stilled brandies.

The fundraising event was held by the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EGCCI).

Zethembe Khuboni, a brandy connoisseur, claims there is more to brandy than drinking it with cola.

The evening was presented by the Distell Group, and guests enjoyed a delicious brandy cocktail on arrival.

This was followed by a short presentation on the art of brandy distillation.

History has it that brandy was distilled during the Anglo Boer War by General Kobie Marais using chenin blanc and colombard grapes.

The brandy was then transported to various military bases.

Another brandy connoisseur, Daddy Mabogoane, says this brandy was high in demand and more and more had to be delivered.

Armed with a complimentary brandy snifter, everyone was then invited to taste a selection of premium brandies, including an award-winning 18-year-old spirit.

“This was definitely not a ‘Klippies and Coke’ evening,” says Daddy.

Chef Matthew Havinga served a delicious dinner, followed by dessert, coffee and more brandy.

Chairman of the CGCCI fundraising committee, Barbara-Ann Day, expressed her gratitude for the support and positive feedback she received about the evening.

The brandy tasting is only one of many fundraising events the EGCCI has planned for this year.
