Ward councillor speaks out on New State Areas’ state

Ward councillor Dean Stone has had enough of the poor state of New State Areas.

In addition to the potholes, open manholes and non-functioning street lights plaguing the area, the parks are littered with rubbish.

Stone says these matters have, for more than six months, been reported to the Ekurhuleni Metro by himself and residents.

“No action has been taken,” he says.

He provided a list of streets in the area without working street lights.

These are:

  • Danie Street
  • Beverley Street
  • Boyes Street
  • Hendrik Street
  • Ashley Street
  • Kenneth Street

Stone took the Addie on a ‘tour’ of New State Areas and pointed out various problems.

One of the electricity poles found in the park in Ashley Street has been damaged and stands at a dangerous angle.

While the exact cause of the damage is not known, Stone suspects it was hit by a vehicle causing it to bend in the middle.

Two open manholes in South Main Reef Road pose a dangerous threat to motorists and pedestrians alike.

One of the manholes has been covered with an ill fitting cement lid.

The lid is too big for the manhole and it tilts at a dangerous angle. This manhole also has a large cement block next to it.

The other manhole has been open for many months and is barely visible when driving or walking down this road.

One resident stopped and explained that one of his friends fell in this manhole and sustained serious injuries.

Stone also pointed out that an underground pipe was repaired in the area about a month ago, and that the mess from the work had not been cleared..

“They just left it in a state, not bothering to fix the road or clean up,” he says.

The park, in which Stone arranged for playground equipment to be installed about six years ago, has deteriorated drastically.

“I thought the addition of the equipment would improve maintenance, but it seems that it hasn’t,” he says.

The park is littered with beer bottles and other rubbish.

On arrival at the park, contractors were busy cutting the grass.

Stone invited Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele to visit his ward so he can show him these problems, and hopes the invitation will arouse a reaction.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
