Metro claims sewage never reached the spruit

The water at the Blesbokspruit is still clear.

The Ekurhuleni Metro has denied claims it was responsible for pumping raw sewage into the Blesbokspruit.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the waste never reached the spruit.

The Addie was accompanied to the site by environmentalist Stan Madden last week, where metro workers were seen using a generator and pipe to pump sewage into a storm water trench.

Madden accused the metro of taking a short cut.

Although a metro health inspector put a stop to the project, Gadebe claims they did not take a short cut.

“We had two options, to either let the sewer system overflow and flood residents in Dyer Road, or to create a temporary retention dam in the trench,” he says.

Therefore the metro have blocked the storm water trench approximately 200m to 300m downstream to create the retention dam.

They did do level control on the dam with vacuum tankers.

Gadebe states they plan to rehabilitate the trench afterwards, but the conditions at the site did not allow them to do any treatment before disposing into the dam.

“The cost and availability of a 34 hour truck sucking service was not feasible,” he concludes.
