Alleged child abusers face high court

The Springs couple accused of assaulting and holding their children captive will be back in court today.

The man and  his wife are expected to appear in the Delmas High Court.

The 36-year-old man was arrested in May, last year, after his 11-year-old son ran to a neighbour’s house for help.

The man was arrested for  child abuse, assault and attempted murder.

The children aged 16, 11, three, two and one at the time, were removed and taken to a place of safety.

His bail application failed and he has remained in custody at the Modderbee Prison.

The man’s  36-year-old wife, who initially claimed her husband had raped her, was arrested on June 23 and faces the same charges.

At her bail application hearing in July at the Springs Magistrate’s’s Court, she denied the rape claims and accused the police of intimidation.

She was granted R2 000 bail and was ordered not to have contact with her five children.

The couple’s names are withheld to protect the children’s identity.
