What does an insurance sales consultant do?

You don't need a qualification or experience to be an insurance sales consultant.

“All you need is a matric certificate and motivational drive.”

These are the words of insurance sales consultant Warren Woolley (27), who has been in the insurance business for six years.

Depending on what a person is best suited for, there are various departments in which you can work in the insurance consulting field.

An insurance consultant is responsible for sourcing clients, providing quotes for an insurance policy as well as finalising that policy.

Once a policy has been finalised, clients are dealt with by a client care department.

“You just need to phone, form a relationship with the client, give them a quote and sell the policy,” says Warren.

According to him, if a person is strongly motivated they do not need a specific qualification or to study further to pursue this career.

He states that it is a career where good money can be made and there are always growth opportunities.

“I was promoted to a supervisory position after four years, so within five to ten years there is a possibility that you can be promoted to management,” says Warren.

He adds applicants should meet the following criteria:

n have a strong character

n be resilient

n be persistent

n be loyal

n be disciplined

n be hard-working

n be motivated

Warren says a person who satisfies these requirements, is a perfect candidate for a position at an insurance company.

“You also need to have a basic understanding of maths, but there is not really need for in-depth knowledge,” he says.

Warren adds that it is not an easy job as there are many challenging aspects to it, but with the right attitude and positivity, it is enjoyable.

An entry level insurance consultant with no experience can earn a basic salary of around R5 000 per month.

Commission, from selling policies, can also be earned.

“As soon as you’re negative, you’re not going to love what you do, and working with people is one of the most satisfying parts of the job.”

“If you don’t have a qualification or experience and you are driven to make money, this is the career for you,” Warren concludes.
