A disaster waiting to happen

A Daggafontein resident believes a leaning tree may be hazardous to his property.

George Janse van Rensburg (70) and his wife Baby (66) live in Kestrel Road, and explain all the trees across the road from their property have been cut down, except for one.

The remaining tree leans towards the couple’s home, and they fear it will fall over and cause considerable damage.

“We have lived here since 1983 and the tree has never been like that,” says George.

He says the other trees supported the leaning tree, and prevented it from falling over.

“Now that those trees are no longer here, it’s only a matter of time before this tree falls,” says George.

George states the tree is one of only a few on the property and no one wants to claim responsibility for it.

“I asked the owner of the property and he says the tree does not belong to him, but to council.”

George says if the tree falls over, no one will take responsibility and he will be left paying the damages.

He further adds that their area is not being maintained at all, and says some of the street lights are not working, while others are constantly burning.

Ekurhuleni Metro workers also allegedly refused to cut the grass on the pavements and reportedly told George they are not paid to cut the grass in certain areas.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
