Suspects allegedly steal cigarettes

A truck driver from British American Tobacco was delivering cigarettes to Spar in Clydesdale Road, Casseldale when he was hijacked at 12.30pm today ( May 13)

Two of the eight suspects, who hijacked a cigarette truck, was arrested on the N17 highway this afternoon.

While the driver of the delivery truck and his crew were offloading cigarettes, two armed suspects approached them and pointed guns at them.

The driver’s crew allegedly ran away leaving him behind with the alleged hijackers.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the suspects instructed the 49-year-old driver to get into the truck and drove off with him towards Edelweiss.

While waiting on the corner of Bosbok and Impala streets, they were soon joined by six more suspects who started offloading the boxes of cigarettes into another truck and fled away.

The police, however, managed to later arrest two suspects between the age of 31 and 32 years along the N17 highway.

The suspects were taken to the Boksburg Police Station and will appear in court soon.
