Earth Angels seek to save Vita Nova

For the price of non-perishable food, clothes or blankets, pupils at various schools in Springs were allowed to wear civvies to school on Friday.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Earth Angels, sought to collect items for Vita Nova Centre, in Daggafontein, which caters to the needs of 108 mentally and physically disabled residents.

The centre does not receive enough in government grants, or payments from residents’ families, to meet all its commitments and the needs of the residents, and is currently in dire financial straits.

Identifying this need within the community, and in a bid to help avoid the closure of the centre, seven local women formed the Earth Angels to create awareness of, and help raise funds for, Vita Nova.

The women approached Springs schools with the idea of having a civvies day, allowing the children to wear their own clothes to school provided they paid for the opportunity by donating necessary items which will be delivered to Vita Nova.

Their second project is a “ladies night” taking place on May 28 with three local bars coming on board to help raise funds.

“Usually in business it is dog eat dog competition with profits taking first place before anything else.

“This is not the case with three small pub/restaurants within 1km of each other coming on board, giving up space and equipment to help us raise funds,” says Louise Mawhinney, one of the Earth Angels.

The event will take place at Scotties who have donated the venue for the evening.

The Deck will provide the marquee, tables and chairs, heaters and donations for a raffle, and The Quench Corner will donate prizes for the raffle.

“These guys have been fantastic and have stood together to assist even though it means a loss of income for their particular pubs on the evening, which at the end of month could be quite substantial,” Louise adds.

“There is a saying that angels walk among us every day – this is so true of our sponsors and all involved but instead they are Earth Angels with hidden wings,” she concludes.
