Prepare for more power cuts

Residents may be in for another night of darkness as Eskom implements stage two load shedding.

They announced on their Twitter account that load shedding will start from 4pm and continue until 10pm due to a shortage of generating capacity.

Eskom asks residents to switch off geysers, pool pumps, non-essential lights and respond to the alerts on TV.

They also state that commercial customers can make a big difference by switching off non-essential lights and not leaving office equipment on standby mode after hours.

The power system is under heavy strain and even more so during the evening peak hours as the demand increases.

If the demand exceeds supply, Eskom then has to load shed according to how much the demand is.

Here are the stages explained:

  • Stage One allows for up to 1 000 Megawatts (MW) of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage Two allows for up to 2 000 MW of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage Three allows for up to 3 000 MW of the national load to be shed.
  • Stage Four allows for up to 4 000 MW of the national load to be shed.

Eskom says that load shedding will be implemented, in most instances, in two hour blocks with an additional 30 minutes for switching between blocks whenever load shedding is required.

Residents may therefore be without electricity for two-and-a-half hours.
