Maintenance is finally taking place at Eureka High School

Contractors are currently refurbishing Eureka High School.

Former principal Pravin Jugath, who was the principal for 13 years, says he is impressed with the current refurbishments taking place at the school.

He has tried to motivate the Department of Education on numerous occasions to conduct maintenance at the school and never gave up hope.

The date on a plaque at the entrance of the school states it was built in 1938.

Jugath was concerned about the old building.

Ceilings in the classrooms, principal’s office and front office had collapsed from water damage – the result of a leak in the roof.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane, there has been a lot of vandalism at the school over the past years.

This made made the building deteriorate to a distressed level that necessitated the refurbishment.

A contractor has been appointed and recently started with the repairs.

After trying everything in his power, Jugath is pleased to see much needed maintenance is being done by the department.

He says it will be good for the moral of the learners, teachers and governing body, to learn and teach in a healthy environment.

The department claims the school has been on its priority list for major repairs, meaning the total refurbishment of the school.

Sekhonyane says when the work is done a palisade fence will be erected.

The department has made arrangements for the work being done on site, to not cause disruptions to schooling.
