Ginger will be missed

Robert Burns Campbell-Atkins, known to most people as 'Ginger', died on April 20, at the age of 87.

Born in Brakpan, he moved to Springs in 1974 and joined the Vereeniging Refractories.

He took up golf and was a member of the Pollak Park Golf Club for 42 years.

Campbell-Atkins played in the Link Belt monthly competitions at Pollak Park, and when this was stopped, he started a monthly event which became known as Ginger’s Day.

This has been played at Pollak Park for over 23 years, according to golfer Bruce Gardner.

Despite the deterioration of his health over the last few years, Campbell-Atkins would still attend the special annual Ginger’s Day prize-giving with his wife Cathy Campbell-Atkins.

Although he was in pain, he would smile and greet everyone.

Ginger left the many participants of the Ginger’s Golf Day with many fond memories, and will be greatly missed.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family with thanks for starting something, which will continue in his wonderful memory,” concludes Bruce.
