Woman strangled and robbed

A woman was strangled by a man who broke into her shack in James Street, Gugulethu, on Saturday.

The woman and two other people were asleep at 4am, when the woman was awoken by a man outside calling for someone in the shack.

She went to wake up the man to inform him that someone is looking for him.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says the woman then noticed a man standing next to them.

He allegedly gained entry into the shack by pulling away one of the zink sheets.

The man started strangling the woman, threw her on the bed and tried to rip off her pyjamas.

A second man entered the shack, and started assaulting the other two victims in bed.

The woman fought back, and together with one of the other victims, managed to escape.

When they returned home, they found a blanket and two cellphones missing.

A 24-year-old man was arrested later that day on a charge of house robbery.

The suspect briefly appeared in Springs Regional Court on Monday.

Bail was denied and he remains in custody at Modderbee Prison until his next court appearance on May 11.
