Suspected hijacker arrested at border post

Truck hijacked and found on the same day.

One of five men wanted for hijacking a truck in Springs on Monday (April 27) was arrested later that day at the Lebombo Border Post (Mozambique border).

The driver of the truck, who was on his way from Mpumalanga to Carletonville, was driving through Springs when he heard a strange noise.

He stopped the truck along Delmas Road in Endicott, and got out to investigate.

He was then approached by five men who ordered him to get back into the truck.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says the suspects tied the driver up with shoelaces, covered his head with a blanket and drove off.

They drove for a short while and dropped the driver off in an open field.

Greybe says they ordered the victim not to look at them when they removed the blanket.

The driver, however, saw one of the suspects was armed with a gun.

After the suspects drove off in the truck, the driver managed to untie himself and ran to the nearest road.

He stopped a passing SAPS vehicle who took him to the Heidelberg Police Station to open a case of truck hijacking.

The suspected hijacker was arrested at about 6.30pm at the border post, and the truck was recovered in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.
