Sasol may contribute to lighter loads

There may be hope for less load shedding in the near future.

It has come to light that Sasol may now be supplying electricity to Eskom to lighten load shedding in the country.

Eskom spokesman, Khulu Phasiwe, has confirmed this and says they buy electricity from Sasol.

“We buy power from as many suppliers as possible, as well as from cities,” says Phasiwe.

He adds that Sasol has their own power station to generate electricity, and the extra capacity Sasol generates but does not use, will be supplied to Eskom.

“It’s like a trade-off, they buy from us and we buy from them,” says Phasiwe.”

Sasol spokesman, Alex Anderson, says while Sasol remains a substantial importer of electricity from Eskom, the power purchase agreements (PPA) create the framework to increase internal generation and reduce imports.

“In this way, Sasol has been contributing to improving the Southern African energy landscape through gradual generation on existing facilities, as well as the addition of substantial new capacity in the last five years,” he says.

“In total, we have a cumulative capacity to self-generate up to 70% of our own electricity requirements in South Africa, easing power grid constraints and promoting cleaner electricity generation.”

Spokesman for Ekurhuleni, Themba Gadebe, says Eskom does supply electricity to the metro

“From where Eskom gets its supply, is of no concern to the metro,” he says.
