UPDATE: Armed suspects aim to steal cash

The armed robbers fled empty-handed after an attempted robbery.

Security guards at a business in Industry Road, New Era, exchanged fire with alleged suspects during an attempted armed robbery on Tuesday.

At 2.15pm, four suspects allegedly followed an empty truck on its way to the business to buy stock.

The driver of the truck allegedly claimed he noticed a white Mercedes following him when he passed Carnival City on his way to Springs.

He parked the truck in Industry Road and climbed out of the truck.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says the truck driver claims he was in possession of a large amount of cash.

The Mercedes stopped next to the truck and one of its occupants pointed a gun at the truck driver.

Greybe says they demanded cash and ordered the truck driver not to run, but he fled to a nearby shop.

The armed security guards in the guard huts noticed the attempted robbery.

It is not sure how many suspects were armed, but the guards believe the suspects fired two shots at them.

The guards fired back at the suspects causing the suspects to return to their vehicle and drive off.

They fled the scene empty-handed.

No one was hurt.

A case of attempted armed robbery was opened at the Springs Police Station.
