BREAKING NEWS: EMPD victorious over thieves

High-speed chase ends in one death.

A shoot-out took place during a high-speed chase in Rhokana Avenue, Selcourt, today (April 20).

Two EMPD officials heard a call on the Springs police radio about a vehicle involved in a house robbery in Nigel, at 2.10pm.

They received another radio call from Nigel police, who were in pursuit of the silver Audi, reporting that the  Audi was on its way to Springs.

EMPD officials Louis Els and Louwtjie du Toit were in Wit Road, when the car drove past them.

They immediately made a U-turn in pursuit of the Audi.

The officials claim when the suspects noticed they were being followed they turned left into Charterland Avenue, and right into Molyneux Road, and then into Nigel Road.

The pursuit continued along Tonk Meter Way, where the suspects allegedly fired several shots at the EMPD vehicle.

Several other EMPD and police vehicles joined in the chase, and returned fire.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says the pursuit continued to the corner of Maziya and Majola streets, KwaThema, where one of the suspects was allegedly shot and killed by an EMPD official.

Greybe says paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.

The other three suspects, who sustained no injuries, were arrested on the scene.

On further investigation, the vehicle’s VIN number was checked by police, and it was discovered to have been stolen in Pretoria West earlier this month.

Further investigations will follow to see if the vehicle and suspects can be linked to other robberies.
