Keep employees safe

Young people who aspire to save lives should consider a career in health and safety.

Health and safety manager Aré van Zyl advises young people to consider business management, mechanical technology, electrical technology and any other trade subjects available in the education syllabus in their secondary schooling

career.

He explains one can study a for a three-year diploma in safety management at UNISA, or for a degree, which takes four years.

“Vocational training, which is the practicality of the career, is very imperative in helping the officer to be equipped with the required skills”, says van Zyl.

According to van Zyl, you must be objective before considering the career, as you must comply by the rules of the Department of Labour at all times.

Van Zyl says you also have the duty of reporting to the manager of the institution you’re employed at on a monthly basis.

He says the advantage of the career is that once you are an officer, you create safety awareness in the organisation or company you work for.

“An officer has to be accredited with the Health and Welfare Sector,Education and Train ing Authority,” says van Zyl.

The disadvantage of the career, says van Zyl, is the salary is not always guaranteed when helping in your community, as some people do not reward your work.
