Foreign national back in court

Back in court again today (April 17).

A foreign national, who was recently arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, appeared in the Springs Regional Court again, on Tuesday (April 7).

He and four other men were arrested by the EMPD Tracing Unit during a routine morning patrol near the Gugulethu Informal Settlement on March 28.

These men, aged between 20 and 32, are suspected to be involved in illegal mining and related faction-fighting in the area.

One unlicensed firearm and seven live rounds of ammunition were confiscated during the arrest.

The metro officials noticed a suspicious-looking Toyota Corolla with five male occupants and stopped the vehicle.

EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago says upon searching it and its occupants, officers found an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol on one of the men.

Without proof of passports or any other legal documentation, the other four foreigners were taken in on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

They were recently removed from the Springs police cells by Department of Home Affair officials and taken to the Lindela Repatriation Centre, in Krugersdorp, from where they will be deported.

He appeared in court again on Tuesday but the case was postponed to April 17.

Spokesperson for the Springs police, Amanda Greybe, says the suspect will remain in custody at Modderbee Prison.
