Cast your eyes to the sky

Fancy taking a guided bird walk followed by some stargazing?

The Springs/Nigel branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) will be doing this on Saturday at the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, and everyone is invited.

To get there, take the R42 Nigel/Delmas Road from Springs, cross the Blesbokspruit bridge and turn immediately after the Delmas/Holfontein sign, onto a paved brick road, into the sanctuary.

Meet at the picnic area at 4pm to join environmentalist Stan Madden on the guided bird walk at 4.30pm.

This will be followed by a bring and braai.

Braais will be provided.

At 6.30pm, after the braai, the well-known Eastern Gauteng astronomer, Andrew Helston, will talk on the fascinating subject of astronomy.

Madden says everyone will learn about nebula and light years.

The stargazing will start at 7pm, and with the aid of powerful telescopes, astronomers will guide you through the fascinating night skies.

Madden reminds everyone to bring their binoculars and torches.

An admission fee of R50 per vehicle will be charged, and all proceeds will be used for local conservation purposes by Wessa.

A lucky draw will take place and there are several prizes to be won.

For more information contact Madden on 082 471 6050 or Ron Burrows on 083 272 8880.
