Cash-in-transit robbers escape empty handed

Police are currently in pursuit of approximately 10 armed men who attacked two armoured vehicles in Springs at 11am this morning.

SAPS members are currently in pursuit of a gold Mercedes in Vosloorus after a gun fight, resulting in one death, took place on the Industry Road railway bridge in Springs at 11am this morning (Monday).

Two armoured vehicles, travelling from Boksburg to an unknown (as yet) destination came under fire when they were attached by approximately 10 men.

The two armoured Ford Rangers – one bearing two safes containing cash and a second back up vehicle – were forced to stop on the bridge when the driver of a Toyota double cab, coming in the opposite direction, smashed into the first Ford.

The Toyota was followed by a gold Mercedes and, once both Fords had stopped, approximately 10 heavily armed men jumped out of the Toyota and Mercedes and opened fire on the occupants of the two Fords.

It is believed the occupants of the Fords returned fire.

The driver of the back up vehicle was killed in the crossfire and his passenger was shot in the knee and later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after receiving treatment on scene by Netcare911 personnel.

By the time the EMPD and SAPS arrived on the scene the men had already fled the scene in the Mercedes, leaving the safes and their contents untouched.

Police on scene believe that they may have heard the police sirens and made their getaway without opening the safes in the Ford.

An Addie journalist is still on the scene and more details will follow once these have been confirmed.
