DA disappointed by reshuffle

Following the debate of the State of the City Address on Thursday, the monthly council meeting was held.

It started off with parties having to put forth nominees for the election of a new chairman of committee.

According to Shelley Loe, a DA councillor, what started off with an election went completely wrong.

“It was a absolute circus of an election,” says Loe.

She says the ANC nominees have not signed the ballad paper and to not have the signature of those nominated is a very severe transgression of the rules.

“They shouldn’t have been allowed to participate, but the speaker allowed it.”

An item was raised in the meeting on which there was disagreement, but Loe says they did not want to listen to reason.

“That’s when we voted against it and walked out,” she says.

“The speaker allows rules to be trampled on and she is the one who is supposed to be protecting those rules.”

The DA in Ekurhuleni says they are glad that Mayor Mondli Gungubele heeded their call for a cabinet reshuffle, but is disappointed by the appointments made.

According to the DA, many non-performing MMCs have simply been reshuffled to fill other positions, which will surely result in those committees also under-performing.

“We would like to have seen new faces enter these positions in order to drive the change the people of Ekurhuleni so desperately need, instead there is not a breath of fresh air and the same individuals still fill these high powered positions,” they state in a press release.

They also claim that the Mayor highlighted the need for a non-racial Ekurhuleni, but say that his very own cabinet does not reflect the rainbow nation.
