Things to do before travelling this Easter

Checklist for your car before taking the long road.

With the Easter holidays here and many of us planning to go on a road trip it is wise to check your car before you leave home.

Louis Lombaard, sales executive of Springs Kia gives this important check list:

  •  Make sure that your car is in a good condition and running smoothly, because this will avoid breakdowns or mechanical issues. If it is almost time to get the oil changed, do it before you leave because a long trip can put additional stress on the motor.
  •  Besides the oil, check all the other fluids in your car – the engine coolant and brake fluid levels.
  •  Check your car’s tyre pressure. Your car’s maximum air pressure should be printed in the owners’ manual or on a sticker on the car body at the driver’s door. Also, don’t forget to check the spare tyre pressure.
  •  Check you the wear on your tyres by using a coin. The deeper the coin sinks into the tire, the better condition of the tires are.
  •  Check your car’s air filter because it improves your car’s performance.
  •  Check that all lights and signals are functional on your car. You will need the help of another person to see if the lights are working. Replace the bulbs if necessary.
  •  Ensure that you have all emergency equipment inside your car, and that everything works properly. The emergency equipment includes, an up-to-date map, cellphone, spare tire and emergency tools such as a jack and spanner, triangle and a tyre inflator in a can. Flashlights, medical kits and fire extinguishers may come in handy in worse-case scenarios.
  •  Wash your car or only the windows to ensure the best visibility.
