Springs Civic Centre holds many fascinating things

Springs Civic Centre will soon have its water feature working again.

According to Themba Gadebe, spokesman for Ekurhuleni, the electrical connections of the water feature were stolen.

“Procurement processes are underway to replace all parts of the broken water feature and as soon as the material has been procured, it will be fixed,” he says.

Since the Civic Centre was built in 1974 until now, the building has been used for community services and administration purposes.

The centre features many facilities such as the rates hall, community halls, administration blocks, licence offices, a library, emergency services control centre and a council chamber.

The cost to hire some of these facilities depend on which facility is needed and the duration thereof.

Gadebe could not say what the average cost is.

“Some parts of the building such as the finance and licensing offices are currently undergoing refurbishments, so as to maintain it for long term use.”

Gert Parsons, ex-mayor of Springs Town, says during Springs’ expansion in the 60s and 70s, it was essential to build bigger offices and that it was a highly controversial decision at the time.
