The shavathon is well supported

The Cansa Shavathon received contributions from two organisations in Springs.

The Selcourt Methodist Church and The Avenues Shopping Centre supported the Cansa Shavathon over the weekend.

On Saturday, the centre was abuzz with shoppers, but also with Cansa supporters.

The Addie joined the Growthpoint staff supporting the event.

The shavers and sprayers had their hands full with people queuing up to give their support.

Not only did some spray their hair in different colours, they also shaved their heads in support of cancer sufferers.

Jonika Welters supports the Shavathon every year.

Her mother-in-law died of breast cancer 10 years ago, therefore she will continue doing so.

Izak Buys had his hair shaved off, but was adamant that his facial hair remain.

“I haven’t shaved my beard for the past 22 years,” he says.

The Selcourt Methodist Church’s the Rev Charlie Wernich donated his long hair to Cansa, after shaving off his locks.

He says he started growing his hair when he left school and supported the Cansa Shavathon for the first time then.

Since then he shaves off his hair every second year for this cause.

He was well prepared when hairdresser Terry Ried tied his long hair in a ponytail on Sunday.

He says his hair grows fast and by November he will have an Afro.

At the same event Beth Adamson and her son, Reece, had their hair shaved off completely.

Several others also took on the challenge.

It was a combined fund-raising event with the Shavathon and the South African National Blood Services.

Church secretary Sharon Laas says they managed to raise R18 000 and handed over the money, two ponytails and a bag full of shaved hair to the organisations.

Sharon says it came to their attention that Cansa uses the hair for oil spills and to make hair mats.
