Mayor’s speech at Ekurhuleni council

The Mayor of Ekurhuleni addressed the council at the council meeting held in Germiston on Thursday.

Mondli Gungubele says the Gibela Rolling Stock project in Dunnottar is on track as many people would have doubted this.

“To allay any fears in this regard, I am excited and proud to announce that Ekurhuleni is handing over the site to PRASA/Gibela,” he says.

He says with drugs becoming a major problem in the communities, the metro police made a breakthrough when they arrested a man in Springs who was caught in possession of Cat with a street value of R1.5-million.

“The metro police have also been extremely vigilant on cases of land invasion which seems to be becoming notorious in the province lately.”

addressing potholes across the city, he said Bidvest Velocity is doing a pothole campaign as part of their social responsibility programme and has already fixed 1 000 potholes in Ekurhuleni, some of them in Bakerton, Welgedacht and KwaThema.

“The on-going load shedding remains a cause of worry for the city and while this is a national crisis, every resident has a responsibility to use power sparingly so that we can reduce load shedding.”

“When it comes to our children, their safety must be of the utmost importance to all of us, I have noticed with great sadness the number of accidents involving scholar transport in our area lately.

“This state of affairs is not acceptable and we have ordered the metro police to be more vigilant on the roads.”

Another issue that Gungubele touched on was the continued presence of “Zama Zamas” (illegal miners mining the defunct mines) in the eastern parts of Ekurhuleni.

“I know the department of mineral resources is doing all in its power to deal with the problem, but somehow disappears for a while and then resurfaces.

“This cannot be allowed to persist.”
