UPDATE: Nigel Road accident claims two lives

EMPD officials say this road has claimed too many lives.

The accident in Nigel Road, Selection Park claimed two lives on Saturday (February 28).

Spokesman for Netcare 911 Santi Steinmann says the paramedics responded to a call at 2pm, and upon arrival they found a man and a woman both in a critical condition.

The woman was treated on the scene but her condition deteriorated and despite all attempts by the paramedics to save her life she died due to the extent of her injuries.

The man was treated on the scene by advanced life support paramedic, André Momberg, from Rescue 24 Ambulance Service.

The patient was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital for urgent medical care, but died later.

André says it was a horrific accident and was one of the worst accidents he has been on in his 13 year career as a paramedic.

It is believed the driver of a silver Corsa Lite lost control of the vehicle when it hit the water in Nigel Road at the N17 bridge.

When the EMPD, Netcare 911 and Rescue 24 Ambulance Services arrived on the scene the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services were already there.

The two EMPD officials Louis Els en Louwrens du Toit says it was a terrible accident.

According to a witness to the accident Chip van Tonder when he changed lanes to prevent hitting the water he saw a silver car closing in on him in the left hand lane.

He says he touched the brakes of his car several times in an attempt to warn the driver of the Corsa Lite.

“It was such a shock to have seen the car hit the water,” he says.

It all happened so fast, but he claims the car overturned and rolled several times before it hit the side of the road nose first, flipped and hit the tree.

The Netcare 911 helicopter arrived within nine minutes, of the call, but the woman had already died at the time of its arrival.

Members from the Selpark Community Police Forum assisted the EMPD with redirecting the traffic as a section of Nigel Road, going to Springs central business district, were closed.

The community gathered around the accident scene and the question were raised why the metro doesn’t do something about the drain systems.

EMPD officials asked the same question and said they attended to three bumper bashes in Star Road, Selcourt.

The Addie experienced a pile up in Welgedacht Road at the Springs Police Station where water also piled up and slowed down traffic.
