Pipeline project running on schedule

The current water pipeline project between Bakerton and Persida is still on schedule.

The project started on June 20 last year and should be completed by December 20.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says about 3 202m pipeline has been laid which is 55% construction progress.

“Previous problems with the delivery of the pipes have been solved,” he says.

The metro’s water master plan investigation revealed that the existing water supply from Persida reservoir to Payneville is currently operating under enormous strain as a result of new developments in Welgedacht Proper and Welgedacht Extension One.

He says the main water supply capacity and pressure to supply current and proposed future development are insufficient.

The metro aims to reduce the pressure in the network by installing approximately 5 917m of pipeline with pipe diameter ranging from 500mm to 300mm for phase one.

Phase two of the project, which is still at the preliminary design stage, would be to construct a 7.5 Mega litre reservoir and a booster pump at the Persida reservoir site in Stoffberg Street.

Gadebe says this is only the beginning of replacing the old rusted water pipes in Springs.

The metro plans to upgrade or replace all pipe work as per the recommendations of the master plan.
