Explosion at sub-station in CBD

The explosion caused a power outage in certain areas.

An explosion took place in the sub-station on the corner Zig Zag Road and Sixth Street, Springs central business district this morning (Tuesday).

Springs resident Aletta Viljoen, who lives across the street from the sub-station says “the explosion was quite loud”.

She immediately contacted the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EMS) as smoke was seen coming from the air vents of the brick building.

The EMS arrived within 10 minutes but by then the smoke had disappeared.

It wasn’t long before one of the metro’s electricity department workers arrived on the scene to unlock the door to the sub-station.

Although no smoke was visible when the doors were opened, a black smoke mark could be seen on the ceiling.

Metro electricians were called out to see what caused the explosion which caused a power outage to houses and business in the area which receive electricity from the sub-station.

Another resident Laurika Dugting claims it is the second explosion to take place at this sub-station, both of which have left them without electricity for hours.

She says it is a frightening sound when you hear the explosion and when she ran outside to investigate she saw smoke coming from the air vents of the sub-station.

She tried to call the metro but no one answered the phone.

The Addie is waiting for comment from the metro.
