When it comes to preparing food and load shedding steps in, it can cause a headache to the one that has to prepare the meal.

No microwave can be used to defrost the meat or quickly cook the rice.

Adjusting the weekly or monthly grocery list might assist the chefs of each household.

The list should include items such as flashlights, candles, blankets and basic tools, but also an assortment of food to last several days.

Buy nonperishable food so that it can be stored unspoiled up until it is needed.

Water is essential and should be number one on the list.

Water is used not only for drinking, but also for washing and to prepare food.

Buy large bottles of water and be aware of each bottle’s expiration date.

Canned food is a must as it is already cooked and can be eaten out of the can.

Foods can include baked beans, soups, chilli and canned fruits and vegetables.

Avoid cans of food with a high levels of sodium, as it can cause thirst resulting in drinking more water.

Some dried foods are nonperishable and will last for a substantial amount of time.

Dried foods include dried fruit, fruit bars, granola and dry cereal.

These foods have a long shelf life, which makes them ideal for storing.

Avoid foods with excessive amounts of salt and sugar as these will dehydrate the body and increase the craving for water.

The fruit bars, granola and cereal should be sugar free.

A variety of other foods can be added to the list including crackers, nuts, energy bars and peanut butter.

Cereal will be a good thing for children.

When making up the list remember to add a manual can opener.
