Photo journalist, Ken Oosterbroek, member of the Bang-Bang Club, was born on February 14, 1963 in Johannesburg.

Ken, who was the chief photographer of The Star, was killed in pre-election fighting in Thokoza on April 18 1994, days before the country’s first democratic elections.

He got shot in the crossfire between hostel dwellers and a South African peacekeeping force in Tokoza.

He and other photographers were covering a clash between peacekeepers and the African National Congress when the peacekeepers opened fire and shot Oosterbroek.

Ken was the Ilford Press Photographer of the Year in both 1989 and 1994.

He was the South African Press Photographer of the Year in 1991.
