Meals without having to cook

The dreaded load shedding is back and as a quick 'food fix', people turn to fast food restaurants for take-aways.

This is not the solution as load shedding is here to stay for a while.

South Africa needs to get used to the lack of electricity and find a way to get around it.

Here are some ideas and tips on how you can make a nice meal for your family when there is load shedding.

As South Africans, many light a braai if there is no electricity, but there are other alternatives as well.

  • Smoked salmon can be used in a salad
  • Another typically South African alternative is biltong, which can be eaten on a roll, enjoyed in a salad or simply eaten the old-fashioned way – plain.
  • Sushi, for those who have a taste for it
  • Deli cold cuts and meats such as hams, salamis, pastrami, etc.
  • Cold chicken, turkey or boerewors.
  • Tinned fish and shellfish such as tuna, salmon, pilchards, crab, muscles, oysters, anchovies, etc.
  • Hot dog sausages and Frankfurters make great cold snacks, or you can whip out that camper cooker, heat in a pan and pop in a roll.

Fresh salads are always an easy alternative for a light meal when Eskom pulls the plug.

There are endless combinations to make a salad, each to your own tastes.

  • Coleslaw
  • Green garden salad
  • Tomato and mozzarella salad
  • Cucumber and mint salad
  • Three-bean salad
  • Baby spinach and carrot salad.

Power tip: When there is electricity and you have some time on your hands, cook many different types of meat and vegetables that you can separate into small bags and freeze until it is needed e.g. when Eskom cuts the power.
