Quinton Swart (22) recently tripped over something in a shop at a nearby shopping mall and fell on his face.

He sustained a 4cm cut above his right eyebrow.

His mother Bernadette Swart claims the staff at the shop ignored her son’s injury and for 30 minutes she and a client tried to assist Quinton.

It is believed he bled quite a bit before a client Andries Bekeberg came to his rescue.

Bernadette says the man took boxes of tissues from a nearby shelve and used that to try and stop the bleeding.

An elderly woman try to assist about 15 minutes later and when
Bernadette asked her why the staff are not willing to help, she claimed they are scared of blood.

According to Bernadette almost 30 minutes passed before the store manager arrived at the scene.

She asked him what took him so long to attend to the accident and he said he was in an important meeting.

She is concerned about the time issue and asks what will happen if it is a senior citizen who gets hurt in the store and they staff take their time before attending to the person.

The store operations director Richard Fuller says it is with regret that this has taken place and they are grateful to hear that Quinton is recovering well.

He explained employee and customer safety is extremely important to them as they strive to provide a work and shopping environment pleasant for all.

In so doing, they ensure to remain compliant with the rules and regulations laid out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act No. 85 of 1993.

“Certain team members, at our stores, are trained in first aid, and we understand that the two team members who assisted Quinton were certified in competence in First Aid Level 2,” he says.

Fuller says he asked Bernadette to submit the medical and other related expenses which she incurred as a result of the incident to them for procedure and compensation.

“We hope that Quinton makes a speedy recovery,” he says.

Quinton’s stitches were taken out today.
