Contractor remove duck pond fence

Wrong fence erected by metro contractor.

Metro contractors started erecting the wrong fence at the George Sutter Park duck pond last week.

Springs resident Wollaston Labuschagne has sent an urgent appeal to the metro parks department regarding their promise to install a clear view fence.

His concern is the lopsided fence currently being erected around the pond.

“The ideal structure would be a clear view fence in order to protect the geese, ducks and all aquatic species in the pond from litter as well as other animals like cats and dogs,” he says.

Various community members have been working hard and invested funds into restoring the dam.

Labuschagne claims the surrounding park has also been restored to be enjoyed by members of the public.

Metro parks department manager Lindiwe Makubalo says the council committed to install the clear view fence.

She claims they wish to place on record that the tender for the clear view fence has been awarded and it is currently on the priority list.

Labuschagne says the fence structure is of extremely poor quality and the wooden poles used are not even treated to withstand the elements.

The committee requested the metro to instruct the contractor to halt all work until such time that an agreement is reached on the specific fence to be erected.

Makubalo says she have instructed the employee who erected the fence to remove it as a matter of urgency as that is not the commitment that the council made to the partners in terms fence.

The metro will communicate once the contractor has given them a commencement date and will keep the community informed of the progress.

“We apologise for the inconvenience,” she adds.

The Addie visited the pond and noticed the fence is being removed by the contractor.
