Man tries to bribe SAPS

A man tried to bribe the police with R1900 not to arrest his brother.

Members of the Springs Public Order Policing (Props) found an unlicensed firearm in an Isuzu bakkie in Welgedacht Road today (January 22).

The police conducted a stop-and-search and, when searching the vehicle, they came across the gun.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the police accompanied the man to his house in Slovo Park where another firearm was found.

The SAPS also found 61 rounds of ammunition and a full magazine in the house.

Ramphora says the suspect phoned his brother who later arrived at the scene.

He offered the police R1 900 to release his brother.

The two brothers were arrested and taken to the Springs police cells.

One was charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and the other with bribery.

“Further investigations will be done to see if the firearms were used for other crimes and who the rightful owner of the pistol and revolver is.

It is not yet known when the two suspects will appear in court.
