Still no facilities at Bakerton Stadium

The metro promises to re-establish it and provide security to avoid further vandalising.

Although Ekurhuleni metro promised to repair the damage done by vandals to Bakerton Stadium’s change rooms and squash court, it is still unusable.

This previously fully equipped and upgraded stadium was destroyed during the last week of July 2014.

Everything that could be sold for scrap metal was removed from the stadium.

This includes all the corrugated iron roofs, window frames and steel doors of the change rooms and squash courts.

The squash court’s glass doors were also broken.

The only steel left is that of the squash court, probably because it is a high building.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin, who opened a case of theft at the Springs SAPS on August 1, says Ekurhuleni Metro has done nothing since the vandalism took place.

“The community is using this place and has no facilities now,” says Sheodin

Themba Gadebe, spokesman of Ekurhuleni metro, says a submission to the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture was done to repair the stadium in its entirety.

He did not supply the date by which this will be completed.

“On approval the stadium will be re-established and would also be secured as per the request,” says Gadebe.
