BREAKING NEWS: Girls locked inside their home for two months

Two girls aged four and seven years have been kept inside a room in their home for more than two months.

While the other children of their age were all smiles, receiving new Christmas clothes and spending time with their families, the two young girls felt like prisoners.

The police received a tip off from the community this afternoon (January 9) informing them of the two girls who have kept inside their rented shack in KwaThema’s Extension three.

The seven-year-old who was in Grade one last year, explained that she had to play the woman of the house since their mother left them with their father (31) to go to Maputo.

“I had to cook for my father and my younger sister,” said the girl.

According to KwaThema police spokesman Captain Mandla Phori the young girls’ father is self employed, selling jewellery at the taxi ranks.

Phori says, the father claims that the girls’ mother who was two months overdue in her pregnancy left the country after experiencing sickness.

He says, the man explained that, after several consultations to find a cure for his wife, it was clear that she had to leave the country to  attend the school of Intwaso where she will be trained to be a traditional healer.

Phori then confirmed that the man has been arrested and is expected to appear in KwaThema Magistrates Court on Monday on a charge of child negligence.

He concluded by mentioning that the two girls who are,  for now, being kept at the KwaThema’s Victim Empowerment Centre will be taken to a place of safety soon.
