Four down – five to go

Six friends, of whom five are ex Springs Boys' High School pupils, summitted Die Berg in Mpumalanga on Saturday.

This was done in honour of environmentalist Doctor Ian Player who died last week.

Burns Maclear (67) they took the same flag they raised when they summitted Kilimanjaro in 2012 with to raise in honour of Ian.

Although the six of them summitted the peak together, they asked Rob Beardsley (66) to take a photo of the group of five who summitted Kilimanjaro.

This Morehill, Benoni resident says the 2 331m peak was probably the toughest peak yet, but when they summitted at 10.45am, it was pure joy for all of them.

Their endeavour to climb nine peaks in nine provinces started with Burns challenging his friends.

Fred Ashton (72), Burns, Koos Bouwer (65), Fred Ashton (72), Trevor Long (72), Dave Inggs (65) and Beardsley completed the climb in just under three hours.

The climb was long with a steep incline and it was very hot, but climbing with their poles they enjoyed nature and the bontebokke wandering around on the peak.

They are grateful to the kindness of all the people they have met on their adventure.

Derick and Karin Lomas from Roossenekal treated the six friends well and their hospitality goes a long way.

The six friends are raising money for the Northfield Methodist Church, Airfield, Benoni.

The six adventurers have more than a month to prepare themselves for their next challenge, Murch Point in the Nieu-Bethesda area in the Northen Cape on January 19 to 23.
