School boy dies after being hit by a taxi

Simphiwe Makhonjwa (15) died this morning (November 25) when he crossed Welgedacht Road, Slovo Park at 7am.

According to witnesses at the scene he crossed at the red robot and slipped and was hit by a taxi.

When EMPD officers Louis Els and Louwrence du Toit, arrived on the scene they found the child’s mother sitting in the road holding her son in her arms.

The taxi driver was questioned by the EMPD and Springs police.

According to Els, she claims another taxi hit the child and with the impact Makhonjwa’s body landed in front of her taxi when she drove over him.

Anna Makhonjwa, Simphiwe’s mother, was called to the scene and when she arrived she found her son lying in the road bleeding.

She says her heart is broken because her son is another victim at the Welgedacht Road crossing.

“The EMPD and metro should put up speed humps, because motorists drive fast on that road.”

She says Simphiwe was a good and clever child.

The boy was allegedly on his way to catch a bus to take him to Lefa-Ifa Secondary School in KwaThema where he was a Grade Eight learner.

Mbuyiseni Kxumalo, principal of the school, says it has been the third tragedy the school experienced this year from learners who died in Slovo Park.

“The police and EMPD needs to do something about this as it makes our learners vulnerable,” he adds.

He claims there is a lot of lawlessness in the area and people should adhere to the traffic rules.

Kxumalo says the policy of the school is to hold a memorial service for learners and to assist the family.

It is not sure when the funeral will be held.
